As an artist, Gabriela is dedicated to exploring textures, dimensions, and scales. She is the founder of Malimbus Studio. Combining traditional craftsmanship with innovative materials, the studio primarily works with organic and recycled materials, ensuring sustainability and environmental consciousness.
Focusing on braiding, weaving, and the art of knots, each handmade piece is uniquely crafted to fit specific spaces. Every tapestry tells a story, inspired by nature and symbolism, where knots create expressive volumes and forms. The studio offers both original and customizable designs, collaborating with clients to reinterpret styles and identities into meaningful artistic objects.
The name Malimbus comes from weaver birds in Sub-Saharan Africa, known for their intricate nests and vibrant colors. Like these birds, Malimbus Studio embraces creativity, craftsmanship, and nature’s beauty to design unique, storytelling textile artworks.
Latest project: Germinated Tapestry
A germinated tapestry is a fleeting work, a celebration of the ephemeral beauty of nature. Unlike traditional textiles, it is composed of plant seeds that sprout with intensity and force, for example legumes and cereals. In the tapestry they sprout, grow and wither, creating a living canvas in constant transformation. The process begins with carefully selected seeds, sown in an organic blanket, such as wool or cotton. As they grow, the tapestry becomes a vibrant play of colors and textures, offering a unique sensory experience. Perfect for events, exhibitions or urban spaces, it captivates with its immediacy and fleeting character.
