Inspiring Future Media - seminar recap

On February 6, 2025, our partner Espronceda, Institute of Art & Culture of Barcelona (Spain), hosted the PMP Online Seminar: Future Media, an event exploring the intersection of technology, art, and human connection. The seminar brought together experts in Extended Reality (XR), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Virtual Environments, offering valuable insights into how emerging technologies are reshaping artistic practices.
Participants engaged in discussions on spatial computing, the metaverse, embodied VR experiences, and AI-generated art, gaining knowledge and insights for their future projects.
Inspiring insights and practical tools
Marc Galvez – VR developer and project manager, provided an in-depth exploration of the reality-virtuality continuum, XR tools, and immersive storytelling. During the lecture, there were interesting questions from the participants, for example how will VR and hyper reality affect the human intellectual and physical abilities, can the legislation keep up with the rapid development, and could VR cause conflict with religions. To quote one of the participants, Jari Penttinen from the Lapland UAS: “AI driven world is still Terra incognita.”

Daniel Sabio – New Media and Digital artist, and professor, presented how AI can revolutionize artistic creation, from ideation to multimedia generation. Daniel talked about their artistic process and presented many of the AI tools they have been using and exploring in the projects. Tools and applications are developing constantly in high speed and according to Daniel, there already are retro AI video techniques. In the presentation, Daniel covered a range of tools for visual art, video art, music and data-based AI. They also confessed, with a smirk, their obsession to solar punk.

Daniel González Franco – Artist and researcher, presented innovative projects on embodied VR, body ownership illusions, and human connection through virtual experiences. His projects deal with topics from all walks of life, such as refugees, grief, sex wellness, police violence. His work aims to foster empathy, and you can literally see and experience sensations and moments, thanks to the technique of body swap VR – as you are in the shoes of the other person.

In one word: Inspiring!
The seminar was very hands-on, equipping participants with new perspectives on digital narratives and technology-driven creativity. It was an inspiring opportunity to reflect on the evolving role of media in contemporary artistic and cultural practices. The most frequent comment in the meeting chat at the end was: this was inspiring! Some even said it was mind-blowing!
Warm thank you to all the speakers and people who joined in!
